HUATULCO

it's pronounced wall-too-co and you must go!

In February 2023, I took a trip to Huatulco. Now, already, some of you are thinking, where’s that? Hu what? How do you say that? It's pronounced wall-too-co and if I can say anything about Huatulco, it’s GOOOOOOOO!!! So lessgo! Come with me on a “quick” trip to Huatulco. Well, getting there is not quick, but it's worth it, time and money!!

When my friend asked if I wanted to go to Huatulco I said “huh?” Little did I know I was going to a place I would fall in love with.

Huatulco is stunning, it's like you stepped into a postcard. Envision a postcard, and then step into it. That’s Huatulco. Hautulco gives Bora Bora/French Polynesian vibes but in the Pacific Ocean, for a quarter of the cost and travel time (from Los Angeles).

Even though it's not “that far", Huatulco isn’t the easiest destination to get to (no direct flights from LA) but it’s one of the most beautiful beaches I’ve been to in Mexico and it’s worth it. The vibe is nothing but peace. Unlike Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, Cancun, Huatulco is just peaceful. The beaches are beautiful. The water is like glass. The fish literally come up to your feet.

The airport is small. When you exit the plane, you are on the tarmac, not inside the airport. That’s what kicks off your vacation. Stepping out onto the tarmac, palm trees swaying, vacation in the air. It gives total paradise vibes. Like you have arrived in paradise, the warm breeze, the palm trees, perfect weather, but be warned it is humid!!!

To get to your hotel you can take a taxi directly from the airport or you can walk out about a block outside of the airport (5 min walk) to the gas station and there are tons of taxis waiting for like a quarter of the price. There are a few timeshare presentation people to beware of unless that's your thing. But not too many. It was nothing like Cabo, Puerto Vallarta, or Cancun.

When I booked the trip to Huatulco I booked a round trip ticket to Mexico City and then separate tickets from Mexico City to Huatulco and back to Mexico City from Huatulco. On the way back we spent two days in Mexico City, just eating. If you want good Mexican food, go to Mexico City. But this blog isn’t about Mexico City.

We spent three days in Huatulco and I was not ready to leave. One more day would have been the icing on the cake.

Huatulco is not touristy at all. And I love that. It’s not expensive outside of the resort.

We stayed at Camino del Real, it was giving European vibes, very Greece-like, well what I imagine Greece to be like. We opted for the one bedroom with the pool balcony. Do it! Spend the extra $20 a night. You won’t be disappointed. Camino Real Zaashila Huatulco is located in the beautiful Tangolunda Bay, one out of the nine bays of Huatulco in the state of Oaxaca. It was about a 25 minute drive from the airport.

The resort has typical Mexico resort prices. It was not all inclusive. The food was yummy, but the drinks were a little watered-down. The pool wait service wasn’t the best.

There are pool chairs on the beach but you have to get there early to get your seats.

Our friends stayed at Dreams, which is next door. It was about a five minute walk. Dreams is an all-inclusive resort. Camino del Real was not. We were able to purchase day passes to Dreams for approximately $60 per person. It was worth the price. We enjoyed drinks and food, which were your typical all-inclusive drinks and buffet style food.

At night we went to La Crucecita. It was a 15 minute cab ride from our hotel and about $10. It’s a downtown type area with families and friendly people. La Crucecita has food, shopping, street vendors, and street performers. This is where you can do your tourist shopping, try different types of mezcal and molé. Of course I had to have chapulines and ant seasoning. There isn’t really a nightlife like in Cabo or Puerto Vallarta, you're not going to get guys or girls walking around pouring tequila down your throat. One thing I learned is apparently when there is an active nightlife there tends to be a large drug scene and that's not the vibe of Huatulco. We went to La Crema Bar https://g.co/kgs/aGs941n. The vibe is cool, chill, and colorful. Good drinks. The prices are decent. Definitely better than our hotel.

The next day we took a “private'' little boat tour, emphasis on little. It was a small fishing boat but it was perfect. It took us to several little gems along the shore. It's better than taking the large boat tour because you get to go to smaller places the large boats can go. It's not “luxurious”, but its It's your own private tour and it's awesome. Just talk to the guys on the beach. They’ll point you in the right direction. While on the tour make sure you eat fresh seafood from the little restaurants along the water. It’s the freshest seafood I've ever had.

Hautulco is so picturesque. I’d recommend getting a driver to take you all around just to embrace the beauty and take lots of pictures. Visit the marina.

I got a massage at Las Conchas Spa and Temazcal . The massage was not the best, it was cheap in price (and quality) compared to California prices. I felt the therapist wasn’t really into it, she kept pausing, almost like she was checking her phone, which took away from the relaxation. My friend loved her massage, so maybe you’ll have a different experience. The massage is not just a massage, but a full body experience. I only wanted to get a massage but I believe they do a body scrub, a steam room, and more.

The best piece of advice I can give you is……wait for it….bring your own metal straw. They don’t do straws here. Respect the turtles please!!! So if you need a straw, bring your own and make sure its metal or glass.

All in all, Huatulco is a vibe, a gem, a place of beauty and relaxation.
