Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve
The Los Penasquitos (meaning little cliffs) Canyon Preserve trail is a 6.2 mile out and back trail located approximately 30 minutes north of San Diego, CA. The trail is pretty flat but rocky so bring the appropriate footwear. The trail takes about 2.5 hours to complete at a slow/moderate pace.
This is a beginner hike, however, the terrain is rocky and very limited shade so you will need a hat, sunglasses, and the appropriate footwear.
When planning to do this hike or any other hike during the summer months start early. I suggest by 6/630 am. It gets hot on this trail plus you want to get there early to get parking. The parking lot is fairly small. There is a $3 parking fee, CASH ONLY. You have to put $3 in an envelope with your license plate number.
The trail ends at a small waterfall. Its a nice serene break before heading back. You can also hang out in the stream at the waterfall if you are up for it. Sign up for the hiking mailing list at alishamichelle.com if you want to see more cool hikes.
The hike begins at a gate that is straight ahead from the parking lot.
Once you cross the main gate keep straight and follow the path, after about five minutes in you will come to Ranch House Crossing, if you want to take a quick five minute detour to see a beautiful stream, cross at your own risk. It's calm but it sucks to have wet shoes if your foot slips.
The trail may start to seem long after a bit. But keep pushing, stay on the path. There will be several signs pointing you toward the waterfall. At some point you may even wonder if you are going the right way. You are. Just stay on the path.
Stop and take breaks as necessary.
Congratulations you made it!! Now enjoy a snack and some water.
Where to park: There is a paid parking lot (see above).
How to get to trail head: Los Penasquitos Canyon Preserve (parking lot) in your mapping service; It is located near San Diego, close to 15 HWY
Approximate time/distance: 2.5 hours/6.3 miles
ProTip: Start early, always remember hiking is a marathon, not a sprint. Take breaks, enjoy nature, but don’t give up.
Happy Hiking.
